Not in This House!

I was looking around the kitchen blog world today and over at SeriousEats they were doing top ten lists of ingredients you would never find in their kitchens and it looked like fun! So here goes…

Ten Things I Hope You Will Never Find In My Kitchen:

1. Miracle Whip (sorry Erik, but even if it wasn’t a nutritional no-no the stuff is GROSS!)

2. Hamburger Helper

3. Corn Syrup

4. Lisa Fernandes of Top Chef cause her attitude sucks!

5. Canola Oil

6. Margarine

7. Kraft Cheese (even if it was organic) in the individually wrapped plastic sheets

8. Anchovies

9. SPAM

10. One Use Water Bottles

Okay, your turn!

Why no canola oil? You always hear it’s “good” and “heart healthy”? Too bad I have like at least 3 of those things in my kitchen right now! ;)

  2. Blakely says:

I was going to ask the same question about canola oil. Enlighten me Ambre!!

  3. Alicia says:

There’s a lot of misconception about canola- I was just reading on someone else’s blog the list of reasons why not to use canola and about half of them were scientifically incorrect. I think a lot of it has come from Weston A Price foundation and Dr. Mercola- both of which I’m wary of. But I don’t care one way or the other whether you use canola or not! :)
    Here’s my list-
    1. Hamburger Helper
    2. White bread (the sandwich type)
    3. fruit snacks, especially the kind with liquid in the middle (Gushers-ewww!)
    4. Velveeta
    5. canned vegetables (besides tomatoes/tomato products)
    6. Aldi’s meat
    7. Any choclate flavored breakfast cereal
    8. shrimp
    9. pop tarts
    10. Easy Mac or even boxed mac and cheese for the most part.

Ladies, here’s a link ( you may have to cut and paste) to an article I appreciated by an scientist turned herbalist who shares a bit about the drawbacks/dangers of canola, soy products, green and black tea, and margarine. I think the article is called “health fads from hell”. It’s one of many places that I’ve read this stuff about canola. One other thing that he doesn’t even mention is that pretty much all canola not labeled organic IS genetically modified. Yuck!

  5. thanks for sharing your list, Alicia! I agree with number 3’s gross factor!

  6. Tony says:

    1. Blogs
    2. Hairspray
    3. Shoes
    4. Unfermented beverages
    5. Lies
    6. Damn lies
    7. Statistics
    8. Burt Reynolds
    9. Comedy
    10. My dignity

  7. I think that 4, 6, and 10 should just be givens, Tony.
